Detailing and Working Drawings - Observation Sketch

We are given a task from our lecturer to go for a site visit and explore different furniture and produce observation sketches of a table, chair and cabinet. The selected furnitures must have different materials to ensure we could understand more on the joinery details and features. For my site visit, I went to IKEA Damansara.

Detailing And Working Drawings - Interior Detailing (Furniture)

In our first lecture, we are introduced to the basics of detail drawings and ways of writing appropriate specification for the drawings. A specification is a detailed description on the sizes, materials, method of joinery, and finishes used in a furniture for the execution of work. This is to make easy for contractors, clients and construction workers to understand the drawing.

We were given a task to produce detailed drawings and specifications of 3 furniture from the lecture slides. This is to increase our understanding on writing a specification. As I was struggling to write the specifications for my sketch, I've realized that we are also learning to observe and study the details of an object, putting things that we've learned during the past year into our work.

Detailing And Working Drawings - Drafting Table Observation Sketch

For the first journal assignment, we were told to produce an observation sketch of the drafting table in the design studio. Since we haven't learn about detail drawings, we are told only to sketch without measurements. It is an exercise to test on our sketching skills and ability of capturing details of objects around us.
