Design Communication - Visual Diary Task 2

Visual Diary Task 2 - Tonal Values

Basic tonal shading techniques for sketches:

  • Hatching - Repetition of parallel lines.
  • Crosshatching - Adds another series of lines that cross the first set.
  • Scribbling - Random lines.
  • Stippling - Fine dots
Tonal shading give a sense of depth, space and volume to an object.

We are required to draw some fruits with different techniques.

Besides that, we are told to produce the tonal values using the four techniques by using a range of pencils from 2H to 8B.
The pencils I used for the task were 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, and 8B.

Different types of tonal shading techniques creates different types of effect on depth and volume. Besides that, the tones can be achieved by using different range of pencils when using a same technique. I realized that I am quiet weak on hatching, scribbling and stippling and probably needs to put more effort in bucking up my skills.

Design Communication - Visual Diary Task 1

Visual Diary Task 1 - Basic Form

Basic forms are shapes with volume. It can be drawn using a simple cube form.

We are told to produce sketches of objects based on the basic form given as below:
  • Cube
  • Cylinder
  • Sphere
  • Cone
  • Combinations of all basic forms given.

Cube - Rubik's Cube

Cylinder - Candle

Cone - Party Hat

Sphere - Ornament

Combinations - Lamp

Reflection
Objects around us are mostly made up of basic forms. Besides that basic forms can be drawn by using a cube to obtain an accurate measurement and form.
