Interior Design Projects 1 - Rhythm Wall

Assignment 1 Part 2 - Rhythm Wall

In continuation to the previous assignment, we are told to produce a rhythm wall based on our understanding of the music genre.

Since dance pop is quite general, I chose to do it's sub genre - Bubblegum pop.

Bubblegum Pop is a music genre which is used to appeal teenagers and the mood of the music is lively and cute while its characteristics are simple, repetitive.

"SWEET TEMPTATION"

I used the keywords:
  • Vivacious - Bright, playful and lively.
  • Repetitive - Simple and repetitive chords.
  • Feminine - Soft
The elements i used are lines, shape and size.

To create a relation between the keywords, I used lines and circles as the basic of my design. When circle and a repetition lines are put together, a wave like structure is produced. Slits are cut in between the lines to create an expandable structure that produce a semi sphere.

The repetition of the semi sphere creates an illusion of bubbles popping out of a flat surface which can express the cute and lively atmosphere of bubblegum pop songs. The "bubbles" can also be pushed towards the opposite direction and create an interactive wall structure which relates to the playful melody.

Lastly, the material I used to produce the rhythm wall is Eva Foam. It is a soft material which looks like marshmallow that can bring out the feeling of femininity as women are often seen as soft and delicate.

I chose Sweet Temptation as my tagline to express cute seduction.

Interior Design Projects 1 - Assignment 1

Assignment 1 - Infographic (Dance Pop)

It was the start of semester 2 and we are given brief on the assignments based on music. Each of us are to pick a music genre by draw lots and form a group in doing research and an info-graphic regarding the genre.

The genre I got is Dance-pop and my group members are Agnes, Claudwie, Wei Yi and Kelsie.

We started our discussion by browsing through the internet and decided to do some individual research based on regional dance pop music divided to k-pop, j-pop, c-pop, Thai-pop, and western pop. After that we discussed on the layout of the info-graphic and one of our group members gave an idea of using map with spreading colors as background to represent how dance-pop spread from its origin to other places around the world while it is still expanding. After having the main idea, we did further research on the sub genre, dance move, history, and fashions.

To speed up the process, we are in charge of different parts of the board with Claudwie and Wei Yi doing the fashion and map, me and Agnes doing characteristics and dance moves while Kelsie do the timeline. Despite having our own part, we still help each other and work together to complete the task in time.

Below will be the infographic:

We used spreading bright colors for the background which represents the lively mood of dance music and the hype that is increasing over time. We also included the dance moves to differentiate the sub genres and their music expression.

To my understanding, Dance pop is a music genre with a fairly fast tempo with catchy and upbeat rhythm that would make someone wants to move and dance. It is a wide spread music genre as half of the songs in the radio are dance pop and it is also widely used in clubs to create a lively atmosphere which will brighten the mood.

Coming to the costumes of dance pop singers, it is often seen to be very vibrant and outstanding with the most significant meat dress of Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson's military jacket.

Even though most of the dance pop music are similar, there are still some slight difference among them. Bubble gum pop musics are targeted towards teenagers and females. the song is cute, simple and sometimes sexual. Electro pop focuses on its use of synthesizers to create a fuzzy and crunchy sound. It is normally fast in tempo. Funk pop will be slower in tempo if compared to other sub genres of dance pop. Although the tempo is not fast, the beats of the song is emphasized and its the most used genre by Michael Jackson the king of pop.

Reflection

In the process of this assignment, I definitely learned more about dance pop music and their difference with other dance music and also the skills to research, organize and compose an info graphic. Although the focus was understanding more about the music genres, I must say that the biggest reward throughout the process was having a great chemistry with my group mates. Every effort given are much appreciated.
